When Confidence is Lacking…

Hard to believe that summer is fast heading in to fall, as kids go back to school in Denver this week and we realize that Labor Day is literally just around the corner!

Lately, a lot of my clients have been talking about confidence, or the lack thereof. Maybe it’s end of summer blues, maybe it’s the political unrest that continues to plague our news each morning, but it seems that August has a lot of folks feeling, well, blah. Like they’ve lost their mojo. Like it’s harder to get jazzed about things that once jazzed them. We’ve all been there, and it’s no fun to find that our once perky, upbeat self seems to have lost her spunk and sense of being on top of her game.

As a Denver therapist specializing in self-esteem counseling, I see a LOT of this issue in women. And I’ll tell you this: No matter how much somebody looks like they have their shit together, more often than not, they’re struggling in some silent way. And in my experience, sometimes it’s you ladies who MOST look like you have it all on lock that tend to put yourselves last, and everyone else first, and hence feel depleted inside.

When confidence in lacking, one of the best things we can do is gently, compassionately remind ourselves that it’s OK to feel that way. It’s normal. From there, we can ask ourselves – what makes me feel GOOD, that perhaps I’ve been neglecting? Have I taken on too much at work, and am hence losing sleep? Am I skipping meals and yoga and playtime with friends? Are there things I really love – painting, writing, reading, cooking, cycling, dreaming – that I’ve temporarily forgotten about?

If the answer is yes, the solution is often carving out a little time to do the things that make us feel alive, beautiful, kickass, and competent. ALL of us are full of talents and skills that are uniquely ours. Tapping in to that inherent wisdom of who we REALLY are can help us come home to ourselves.

If you’re struggling with low self-esteem or lack of confidence, working with a trained Denver self-esteem counselor can help. We’d love to come alongside you and help you tap back in to that core sense of self, that strength and bad-ass attitude that you know is inside of you!
