Struggling with Self-Esteem?
I don't know any woman who hasn't, at some point in her life, struggled with self-esteem in some form or fashion. No matter how smart, pretty, accomplished or secure we may feel or not feel in the world, we live in a society where constant comparison is the norm. Our culture tells us that if we're not "superwoman" balancing work, family, home - and doing it all in stilettos with perfect hair and a smile - we're not "enough."
Research shows us that women are much more likely than men to respond to stress and hard times with self-criticism. However, it also shows that women are MORE likely than men to respond by sharing their pain with others. We're communal by nature, and we know that we need each other. The irony is, we often hear from plenty of women in counseling that they feel judged by other women, and alone in their struggles.
We can help combat negative thoughts that lead to low self-esteem by sharing our journey with safe, affirming people who are going to support us - not judge us. Those most likely to judge are usually people who are also equally judging themselves, and harshly. They're in a lot of pain too, and projecting it outward into the world. This is why self-compassion is SO crucial to getting out of negative self-talk and the feelings of low worth it can create. This is also why practicing self-compassion makes us capable of bringing love and healing to others, and by proxy, to the our city of Denver, and to the world.
Ladies, if you are struggling with low self-esteem, dig deep in your heart and ask yourself, "Who can I talk to about this that will GET it?" Chances are a few special women you know will come to mind, and chances are, if you open with them, they are likely to open up with you. And then you find yourself in a circle of positive love and support in which self-criticism can't survive. Vulnerability and openness with loving, safe people is a shame destroyer!
Counseling can do a lot to help us grow stronger. If you are struggling with self-esteem issues or negative self-talk, we'd love to come alongside you in your journey toward greater self-love. There is LOT we can do in therapy to change those negative thoughts into life-giving, positive ones that will fuel the life you crave!
